Help shape the future of UK Earth System Modelling

The UKESM team is reaching out to the UKESM community to better understand how UKESM models, data, and science are being used across research, training, policy, and other applications. Your input will help us strengthen model development, improve support, and build the case for continued investment in UKESM.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could take around 10 minutes to complete our short survey: https://forms.gle/KB9QJQEwJys2BSgWA

Your responses will help us understand:

  • Who is using UKESM (models, data, and science) – and how
  • What scientific and policy questions UKESM is helping to address
  • The benefits and impact of using UKESM
  • Challenges or barriers you face when using the models or data

Flexible responses
We welcome group responses from teams as well as individual submissions. There is space in the survey to list team members—if you include colleagues, we won’t follow up with them separately.

Why your input matters
Your feedback will directly contribute to:

  • Strengthening the case for continued UKESM support and funding
  • Building an evidence base for how UKESM is used across the UK and beyond
  • Shaping future model development and support priorities and identifying key user needs

Thank you for helping us ensure UKESM continues to deliver impactful science and support a wide range of users.

Background
The first UKESM model was released in 2019 as UKESM1.0, followed by an updated configuration in 2023 (UKESM1.1). Our current model, UKESM1.3, is based on UKESM1.1 with the addition of interactive Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. UKESM1.3 can run in CO2 and CH4 emission mode. The next generation model, UKESM2.0 continues to be developed as a collaborative activity between the Met Office, UKRI-NERC centres and academic and Unified Model partners. We aim to release UKESM2.0 early in 2027. See Model Components – UKESM for further information.
