Climate Insights Briefing with the European Commission

Record breaking land temperatures, marine heat waves, an increasing number of extreme events and wildfires all occurring in the last few years means it is imperative that we continue to communicate our science findings to policymakers. Four EU funded projects, 4CPROVIDECONSTRAIN and ESM2025, worked together to coordinate a briefing for the European Commission on policy-relevant insights and advances in climate science and the Earth system.

After meeting in-person with European Commission officers in Brussels in November 2023, the team provided a briefing note using feedback from the Commission officers. The briefing covers:

  • The possible reduction in the efficiency of carbon sinks as the climate warms;
  • The need for a revised 1.5°C carbon budget;
  • The risks of climate overshoot;
  • The importance of reducing non-CO2 greenhouse gases.
